The three pillars of a sustainable medical writing career

Struggling to progress in medical writing? Discover the three core pillars you need to build a sustainable, confident and future-ready career.

LAST UPDATED: March 17, 2026 | AUTHOR: Michelle Guillemard

If you’re building a career in health or medical writing today, it’s easy to focus on just one area at a time.

You might work on improving your writing.

Or explore how to use AI tools.

Or try to figure out how to find clients or position yourself professionally.

Each of these feels important – and they are.

But focusing on only one can lead to a frustrating kind of progress.

You improve in one area, but still feel stuck overall.

This is because sustainable progress in medical writing rests on three core pillars.

The three pillars of a sustainable medical writing career

1. Writing and health communication skills

This is the foundation. It includes understanding how to interpret evidence, structure content clearly and adapt your writing for different audiences – from patient education to professionals.

Without this, it’s difficult to produce work that is accurate, clear and useful.

2. Career positioning and strategy

This is the part many writers overlook. It’s not just about writing well – it’s about knowing how to present your skills, choose the right opportunities and communicate your value to clients or employers.

Without this, even strong writers can struggle to gain traction.

3. Responsible and effective use of AI

AI is now part of everyday workflows. But using it well requires more than basic prompting. It involves understanding how to guide outputs, verify information and maintain quality, confidentiality, professional standards and responsible use.

Without this, AI can feel inconsistent or risky rather than helpful.

Many early-career writers naturally focus on just one of these pillars.

For example, you might spend time improving your writing, but feel unsure about how to position yourself professionally. Or you might experiment with AI, but worry about whether you’re using it appropriately. Or you might build a portfolio, but struggle to connect it to real opportunities.

This creates uneven progress.

You’re moving forward – but not in a way that feels stable or sustainable.

In contrast, the writers who progress most steadily are the ones who develop all three pillars in a structured way.

They don’t try to master everything at once.

But they do recognise that each pillar supports the others.

Stronger writing makes your work more credible.

Clear positioning helps that work get seen.

Responsible AI use improves efficiency without compromising quality.

Together, they create momentum.

This is something I’ve seen repeatedly at Health Writer Hub.

Many writers begin with one course or one focus area. But at a certain point, there’s a shift – from learning individual skills to wanting a more complete, connected approach.

That’s exactly why the Complete Medical Writing Program was created: to bring these three pillars together into a structured pathway, rather than leaving you to piece them together on your own.

The goal isn’t perfection in all three areas from the beginning.

It’s awareness.

If you can identify which pillar you’ve been focusing on – and which one might be missing – you can start to make more deliberate decisions about how to move forward.

Because building a career in medical writing isn’t just about improving one skill.

It’s about developing a combination of capabilities that work together over time.
