Why you’re not getting responses to medical writing jobs (and what to do instead)

If you’re not getting responses to medical writing jobs, applying for more roles won’t fix it. This article explains what the lack of response really means and what to change before you apply again.

If you’ve applied for 20 or 30 medical writing jobs and heard nothing back, the instinct is usually to keep going.

Apply for more roles. Broaden your search. Increase your chances.

But in most cases, that’s the wrong move.

Because if your first batch of applications hasn’t generated any traction, something in your approach isn’t working. And sending more applications with the same strategy will only lead to more rejection.

Why you’re not getting responses to medical writing jobs (and what to do instead)

No response is feedback

It’s easy to assume that a lack of response is due to competition or bad timing.

But more often, it’s pointing to a specific issue.

Your CV might not be strong enough. Your positioning might not be clear. You might be targeting roles that don’t match your current level. Or you might not yet have enough proof that you can do the work.

If you’re not getting responses to medical writing jobs, this is where to start.

Applying is not the same as being selected

One of the most common mistakes is focusing on the number of applications rather than the quality.

Submitting applications is the visible activity. But being selected depends on how clearly you match what the employer is looking for.

If that alignment isn’t there, volume won’t compensate for it.

This is why applying for more medical writing jobs without changing anything rarely improves your results.

What to fix before you apply again

The more effective approach is to pause and reassess early.

Start by reviewing your medical writing CV. Does it position you as a medical writer, or does it still reflect your previous profession?

Then look at your applications. Are they tailored to each role, or are they relatively generic?

Next, consider your level. Are you applying for entry-level medical writing jobs, or roles that expect prior experience you don’t yet have?

And importantly, do you have evidence of your skills?

A strong medical writing portfolio or relevant writing samples can make a significant difference, especially when you’re transitioning into the field.

If nothing changes, go deeper

If you make changes and still don’t get responses, that doesn’t mean you’re back to square one.

It simply means you haven’t identified the core issue yet.

At that point, you need to go deeper.

Refine your positioning further. Strengthen your samples. Adjust your targeting.

In some cases, you may need to step back from applying altogether and focus on building stronger foundations before re-entering the market.

A better approach to getting medical writing jobs

The key is to treat the process as iterative.

Adjust, observe, refine.

What you want to avoid is reaching a point where you’ve applied for dozens — or even 100 — medical writing jobs without any meaningful response. By then, you’ve invested significant time without improving your chances.

A smaller number of well-targeted, well-positioned applications will always outperform a high volume of generic ones.

You don’t need more applications.

You need an approach that works.

In many cases, the issue isn’t effort: it’s knowing what to improve and how to build the right foundations.
