“When I became aware of Health Writer Hub, I very quickly realised that this was the single most useful resource in my quest to become a freelance medical writer. As an academic scientist, making the transition from lab bench to medical writer has not been the easiest or straightforward of tasks. However, after enrolling on Michelle’s ‘How to become a freelance writer’ course, that path has been well and truly illuminated. From setting a business plan to formulating templates and processes, Michelle walks you through every aspect of becoming a freelance writer.”

ONE OF MY BEST INVESTMENTS
“I would say that How To Become A Freelance Health Writer is one of my best investments on courses. I am so glad to have taken it! I learned at the beginning that I needed to have a business plan, which I now know is very important, if not vital. With Michelle’s enlightening teaching, I came up with my niche of bilingual Chinese and English medical writing. I cannot be happier with it! My favourite is the lesson on setting up a website. Before the course, I would not ever ponder setting up my own website, sending newsletters, or writing a blog. I am doing all of these now. The course has transformed me, from knowing nothing about freelancing to conducting my business with confidence. Michelle is also very timely and helpful in answering all my questions, whether on the student forum or via email. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is new in freelance health and medical writing.”

Joanna White, Australia | Joanna White
Hi – I’m Michelle Guillemard, a freelance health writer and the founder of Health Writer Hub. I’m also the President of the Australasian Medical Writers Association and have been writing about health and medicine for more than a decade.
As soon as I quit employed work and became a freelance health writer, I realised following through with the decision wasn’t nearly as terrifying as I had imagined it to be.
The freelance business strategy I applied enabled me to achieve my 3-year goal in my first year of business (and today I am consistently booked, even with an assistant writer and a pool of contract writers).
Having spent 6 years on the Executive of the Australasian Medical Writers Association and close to 3 years running Health Writer Hub, I’ve spoken with literally hundreds of health & medical writers around the world about that fear and reluctance that holds us back.
I want to help alleviate those concerns and make it easy and accessible for those with the desire to pursue a freelance career in the health writing niche to start (because there is a lot of work out there). That’s the driving force behind How To Become A Freelance Health Writer.
In this course, I give you ALL my insider information, tips and techniques to help you make your freelancing goals a reality – just as I have mine.
I share what worked and didn’t work, and I give you all the tools I wish I’d had access to when I first started out.
You’re probably interested in How To Become A Freelance Health Writer because you have health, medical or scientific qualifications, and/or writing qualifications. Yet you’re feeling challenged when it comes to building a career as a freelance health writer. You’ve got the skills – you’re almost ready to begin.
My course will fill those last remaining gaps – so you can start your freelancing journey effectively and be equipped with the knowledge and power to succeed.
SO IMPRESSED…EVERYTHING IS LOGICALLY THOUGHT OUT AND EASY TO FOLLOW
“Having “hobbled together” a consultancy business for a year between jobs, I am so impressed by the way Michelle has put together everything that I eventually learned plus so much more that I just didn’t think about in this course. Everything is logically thought out, easy to follow even if it isn’t easy to do and provides a great framework for thinking through all the essentials for setting up a new business. Well done and thank you Michelle.”
Dr Deborah Southwell, Australia
I NOW FEEL PREPARED!
“How To Become A Freelance Health Writer is well-designed and logical. The materials are of excellent quality, and very detailed. I now feel prepared!”
Simon Van Rysewyk, Australia
MICHELLE IS EXTREMELY THOUGHTFUL, PROFESSIONAL AND GENEROUS
“I feel very fortunate to have made a professional connection with Michelle. After meeting Michelle in 2013, she has been assisting me with advice and guidance on how to further my work and refine my skills as a Medical writer. Michelle is extremely professional, thoughtful and generous. I also value her extensive experience in the medical writing field. I know I can continue to learn a lot more from her guidance, insight and encouragement. She has been a great influence on the writing choices and progress I have made since we met. I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

Frequently asked questions
What you need to know.
Can you guarantee me freelance work after I complete your course?
When it comes to work, there are no guarantees in the freelance world! Even I don’t always know who I’ll be working for in the three months’ time. If that worries you, freelancing may not be for you. But, if that excites you, please read on! In my course, I do everything in my power to help you find secure, well-paid freelance work. I give you my top strategies for finding opportunities, pitching to clients, securing ongoing client work, marketing your business, and honing your niche. I often post freelance health writing opportunities in the student forums for past and current students, too.
Does this course teach me HOW to write about health, too?
This course is primarily designed to teach you how to set up and run your freelance business. While we discuss aspects of health writing, it’s not a skill-based health writing course. If you’re interested in learning how to write about health, take a look at Health Writer Hub’s Introduction to Health Writing course.
Can I start the course before or after the official start date?
Many of my students have schedules which can make it difficult to commit – and, that’s why I’m very flexible with all my courses. You can absolutely start earlier, or later, as a lot of the learning is self-directed. If you would like to register and have early access to the course, please email me.
Why aren’t the lessons “live”?
People from all over the world take Health Writer Hub’s courses, so it’s very hard to find a time that suits everyone involved. The materials are ready for you to view at a time that suits you – enabling you to get the most out of your learning experience. We also have a student-only forum where you can post questions and answers and interact with the other students taking the course at the time. And, of course, you have unlimited email access to me for the duration of the course – and for as long as you like afterwards.
What is your guarantee/refund policy?
It’s really important to me that everyone who signs up for How To Become A Freelance Health Writer gets the most out of their course. I want you to be satisfied that the course content is exactly as described on this page, and I very much care about providing a high-quality, valuable course for all students. If you are not happy with the course content after you receive the first lesson, I encourage you to let me know so we can discuss your concerns together. If we can’t come to an agreement, you may be eligible for a refund (less $80 administration fee). This guarantee is valid for 5 days after your course commencement date and all refunds are discretionary as determined by me. (Please note: refunds do not apply if you simply change your mind.)
How many people take this course?
Student numbers vary from course to course, but there will never be more than 20 students. I intentionally limit places in all my courses, as every course has a personalised element – and, there is only so much of me to go around! So, if you are keen to take this course, I recommend you sign up early to avoid disappointment.

This course is conducted online, so you will need a laptop and an internet connection – as well as a PDF reader. You are welcome to download the course materials to your desktop to read them offline at a later date.
How long will I have access for?
You can access all course materials for as long as you need to. If you still need access after the 6-week course period, you will be able to continue to use the materials.
What does the course cost?
How To Become A Freelance Health Writer costs $499. You can also combine this with one of my other writing courses and save 30% – check out my course packages here. There are often early-bird discounts available, and the best way to keep up-to-date with these is to subscribe to the Health Writer Hub Newsletter here.
Do I only have one week to review the weekly lessons?
You have as long as you like. Many students like to take their time with the materials. The choice is yours, and rest assured I’m not going anywhere – once you sign up for the course, you will have my support whenever you need it.
How is this course different to other freelance courses?
How To Become A Freelance Health Writer is designed for writers who are specifically interested in freelance health writing, and the advice is tailored to this specific niche. It’s also primarily about the business aspects of freelancing within the health writing industry – that is, how to get set up and run a unique business that’s suitable to your personal aims and objectives.
How often is the course material updated?
The course material is reviewed and updated throughout the year. All students are surveyed after they have completed the course and their suggestions are incorporated. Additionally, I am constantly keeping up to date with new industry trends and looking for the latest advice to include – helping to ensure the content is always as relevant and current as possible.
Can I still take the course if I’m American/ English/ Australian/ European?
I often get students contacting me and asking this question! I have designed the course to be relevant for any English-speaking writer, anywhere. I don’t believe that your location should limit your freelance health writing opportunities, and everything that is taught in this course is applicable at a global level. We’ve had students from Australia, America, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and the UK take this and other Health Writer Hub courses.
Do you offer loyalty discounts?
I do indeed! All students who take one of my courses will receive a voucher for 30% off any of my other courses. You can get in touch with me if you have any questions about this.
Is there really enough health writing work available for everyone?
If there wasn’t, I wouldn’t be teaching this course! Healthcare is a rapidly growing and evolving field. There really is so much writing work out there – regardless of whether you wish to write articles, blogs, handouts, submissions, academic papers, guidelines and more. Forging a successful freelance career involves investing time and energy into your marketing and professionalism – so you can give yourself the best opportunity of securing all the work that comes your way.
How will I avoid looking the same as all the other freelance health writers out there?
My course is absolutely designed to help you hone your uniqueness so that you can stand out and have a point of difference in the health writing niche. No two freelance health writing businesses should be the same as we are all on different health writing journeys – and I definitely don’t teach a cookie-cutter approach to freelancing!
Why health writing – what’s the difference between health writing and medical writing?
For some people, there is no difference – others tend to equate ‘health’ writing with consumer writing and ‘medical’ writing with academic and scientific writing. My course is relevant for all styles of writing within the healthcare niche, as it is about the business of freelancing in the health and medical writing field.
Can you be a referee for me?
I sometimes act as referees for students who I have worked closely with. I am more than happy to discuss how this works with you after you have completed your course. For me to act as your referee, we will need to have developed a close working relationship, Also, I need to feel comfortable I know you well enough to provide honest, accurate and valuable insight into your writing and working habits. Any decisions will made on a case-by-case basis. Please contact me if you’d like to know more about how this works.
I have a question – how can I contact you?
I welcome questions and enquiries and am happy to hear from you. Please contact me via the contact form here.
