I am primarily a health professions educator and researcher but hope to branch out to do a bit of freelance medical writing and editing. Almost immediately, I was able to discern content submitted by students that was generated by AI, rather than actually written by students. I quickly changed assignments to require students to share a personal example so essays submitted weren’t entirely composed by AI. When the syllabus for the course I’m currently teaching was published, I didn’t include anything about the use of AI. The next edition will definitely have guidelines about how to effectively use AI and how to be transparent about the use of AI when completing assignments. I believe AI will enhance the careers of future physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and other health professionals, so we should be teaching students how to use AI effectively with honesty and integrity.
